Pre-workout products are more popular than ever before.  In fact, it’s to the point that they’re available in a wider variety of formulations than what we witnessed on the market almost a decade ago ago.  Pre-workout comes in various product types, including powders, gummies, capsules, and more, and each formula is unique, as companies can use any variety of active ingredients that they want.

One thing that a lot of people will also want to consider is whether or not a specific pre-workout formula is vegan.  So, we are going to compare vegan pre-workout products to nonvegan pre-workout products, in order to see how they differ from one another.

What are Pre-Workout Supplements?

Before we get into the differences between different types of pre-workout (vegan vs. nonvegan, in particular), let’s talk about what these supplements are for anyone new to the concept.  A pre-workout supplement is an all-in-one supplement made up of various active ingredients that can boost your ability to work out.

Essentially, pre-workout products provide loads of performance-enhancing benefits, but keep in mind that ultimately, this is a general term that encompasses a wide variety of supplements used specifically for exercise.

Of course, science has shown us that certain supplements can have an immediate and a cumulative benefit when it comes to our fitness routine.  Like we said, pre-workout, powders, and other supplements can contain any variety of ingredients that improve exercise performance.  Examples include caffeine, creatine, and vitamins & minerals, as well as nitrates and amino acids.  By and large, these supplements use natural rather than synthetic ingredients.

Now, depending on the unique combination of active ingredients, pre-workout products can give you a boost in energy, while preventing muscle fatigue, enhancing motivation, and helping the body grow more muscle.  They’re meant to be taken about a half hour prior to exercise, so that the effects peak right when you are ready to exercise.  Anyone can take them if they lead a fitness-based lifestyle and want to maximize their ability to reach their goals.

Regular (Nonvegan) Pre-Workout vs. Vegan Pre-Workout

Regular (non-vegan) pre-workout supplements and vegan pre-workout supplements are both designed to enhance physical performance, increase energy, and improve focus during workouts. However, they differ mainly in their ingredient sources and composition.

Regular (Nonvegan) Pre-Workout

Not all pre-workout products are vegan.  For instance, if you go with gummies as your product form of choice, keep in mind that many gummies contain gelatin – an animal derivative – although vegan alternatives are sometimes used, like pectin, which is derived from fruits.  Further, some supplements come from animal protein, like certain vitamins and amino acids.

Pros:

  • Effective at Boosting Performance: Of course, the major benefit of any pre-workout product is that it can boost performance, through a number of individual supplements all in one formula.  Pre-workout products can increase energy, endurance, strength, focus, mood, metabolism, and more, helping you achieve your fitness goals faster and more easily than ever.
  • Convenient: Pre-workout supplements come with the benefit of allowing you to get everything you need for a successful exercise routine, all in one single serving.  Rather than loading up on a number of capsules or shakes, you can just take one dose and know you’re getting everything that you need at once.
  • Lots of Options to Choose from: You can choose from all kinds of pre-workout formulas, including different product types (gummies, powders, drinks, tablets, etc.), and different blends/ratios of active ingredients that each play a role in promoting a more effective workout session.

Cons:

  • They’re Not Vegan: Of course, the big issue with nonvegan pre-workout products is that, obviously, they’re not vegan.  And, that’s not an issue if you don’t follow a vegan lifestyle, but a lot of people do.  If you are vegan, you can be consuming multiple animal products with each serving, which will obviously conflict with your diet and personal choices.

Vegan Pre-Workout

Vegan pre-workout products are formulated without any animal derivatives.  We already went over certain ingredients in pre-workout that may not be vegan – like gelatin used in gummies (and sometimes capsules too), and certain nutrients that come from animal protein rather than plant sources.  The good news is that a vegan pre-workout product will likely advertise that it’s vegan on the label, so that anyone who follows a vegan lifestyle will know.  With that being said, here are the pros and cons of going with a vegan pre-workout product.

Pros:

  • All of the Same Pros as Above: Of course, vegan pre-workout can bring you all of the benefits we already discussed in the last section, under the “pros” list, because the use of vegan ingredients rather than animal-based ingredients does not diminish any of the benefits that we talked about earlier.  You can get just as much value out of a plant-sourced mineral, for instance, as an animal-based one, and the use of, say, pectin rather than gelatin does not negatively impact the quality of the gummy’s texture.
  • Friendlier to the Environment: You don’t have to be a strict vegan to not see the value in vegan gummies.  Arguably, they’re more environmentally friendly, because they don’t rely on the livestock industry which has played a role in contributing to environmental issues.
  • May Taste Better: In some cases, plant-based supplements taste better, as sourcing certain nutrients from animal proteins can end up affecting the flavor of a product that you consume.

Cons:

  • There really aren’t any “cons” when it comes to vegan pre-workout products.  Again, they’re just as beneficial and effective as nonvegan ones, with some clear advantages to boot.
