Pre-workout gummies offer lots of active ingredients aimed at improving our fitness game, like creatine, amino acids, mushroom extracts, and other plant derivatives that can boost strength, muscle gains, energy, stamina, and more

One of the most common ingredients you will find in pre-workout gummies is “beta-alanine”, an amino acid associated with various performance-enhancing effects.  And, while it can be extremely effective, some people are seeking out pre-workout gummies that are free of the ingredient.  Considering how common it is, do such gummies exist, and if so, where can you find them?

What is Beta-Alanine?

Beta-Alanine is a naturally occurring beta-amino acid, which’s an amino acid in which the amino group is at the beta position from the carboxylate group.  It's a non-essential amino acid, meaning that it is not essential in the human diet since the body can produce it.

Beta-Alanine is notable for its role in the production of carnosine, a compound that helps neutralize acids in muscles, increasing physical performance in the 60–240 second range. Carnosine is stored in cells and released in response to drops in pH.  Increased stores of carnosine can protect against diet-induced drops in pH (such as from lactic acid), as well as offer protection from exercise-induced lactic acid production.

It's commonly used as a supplement by athletes and bodybuilders to improve performance, increase exercise capacity, and decrease muscle fatigue.  Beta-Alanine is often found in pre-workout supplements, and is an antioxidant as well, used outside of the fitness world.

Why Would Someone Want to Avoid Beta Alanine, if It Can Help with Fitness Endurance?

It's important for individuals to consider their personal health, goals, and circumstances when deciding whether to use supplements like beta-alanine, as it can have some negative effects:

  • Paresthesia: A common side effect of beta-alanine supplementation, paresthesia is characterized by a tingling sensation on the skin.  While it's generally harmless and temporary, some people find it uncomfortable or distracting.
  • Individual Sensitivities or Allergies: Some individuals might have a sensitivity or allergy to beta-alanine, which could lead to adverse reactions.
  • Interactions with Medications: Beta-alanine may interact with certain medications, so individuals on medication should consult with a healthcare provider before supplementing with it.
  • Pre-existing Medical Conditions: People with certain medical conditions might need to avoid beta-alanine.  For instance, beta-alanine might affect heart rate, so individuals with heart conditions should be cautious.
  • Limited Research in Specific Populations: The safety and efficacy of beta-alanine have not been extensively studied in all populations, such as pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, and the elderly.
  • Preference for Natural Diet: Some individuals prefer to rely on a natural diet rather than supplements.  Carnosine, the compound that beta-alanine helps synthesize, is also found in dietary sources like meat, poultry, and fish.

Can Beta-Alanine Suppress Taurine in the Body?

Yes, beta-alanine can suppress taurine levels in the bodyTaurine is an amino sulfonic acid – a chemical that is a required building block of protein.  Unlike most other amino acids, it is not used to build proteins.  Instead, it is found in large amounts in the brain, retina, heart, and blood cells called platelets.

The best food sources of taurine are meat and fish.  Although often referred to as an amino acid, taurine is technically not an amino acid in the classical sense, as it lacks a carboxyl group.

Now, this interaction is due to the way beta-alanine and taurine are metabolized and transported within the body.  Both beta-alanine and taurine use the same transporter, the beta-alanine transporter, for movement into cells.  When beta-alanine is present in high concentrations, it competes with taurine for this transporter, potentially leading to reduced taurine uptake.

This competition can cause a decrease in taurine levels, especially in tissues like muscles and the brain where taurine plays important roles.  Taurine is involved in various physiological processes such as osmoregulation, bile salt formation, and the modulation of calcium signaling.  A decrease in taurine levels can potentially impact these processes.

However, the extent to which beta-alanine supplementation affects taurine levels in humans is still a subject of research, and the clinical significance of this interaction is not fully understood.

How to Avoid Pre-Workout Gummies with Beta-Alanine

Good news everyone, you can buy your pre-workout gummies without beta alanine easily by simply looking at the lists of ingredients.  Companies that make pre-workout gummies are required by law to publish those ingredients on the label, and while not all do, most companies publish that list online as well, where they have their product page.

This way, you can clearly see whether or not a gummy formula contains beta alanine, and if so, how much is in there compared to the other ingredients.

Of course, if a company does not disclose this information, that’s a reason alone to avoid them.  Brands that make pre-workout gummies who don’t release their ingredient lists may very well have something to hide, which is never a good sign.

What are the Best Places for Pre-Workout Gummies without Beta-Alanine?

Wanna know where you can go for your pre-workout gummies that don’t contain beta-alanine, in order to generally make sure that you’re getting the best formulas possible?  Well, let’s share the types of vendors most likely to carry trustworthy products, that are safe, reliable, and beta alanine-free.

Vitamin Stores

First, if there are vitamin stores around you, then you’re in luck.  These places typically offer pre-workout gummies along with all kinds of supplements, only carrying the best brands around to ensure that they are able to stay in business by maintaining a good reputation. We still encourage you to look carefully at what you’re buying, and to pay close attention to whether or not beta alanine is in the ingredients list.

Fitness Stores

Similar to vitamin stores, fitness stores in your local area may carry high-quality workout gummies.  Of course, a “fitness store” is a blanket term for any store that carries fitness products, like weights, workout gear, etc.  This means that they may or may not be stocking gummies that are actually legit, depending on what they personally specialize in.  Again, carefully look at how they formulate their products to be on the safe side.

Online Pre-Workout Vendors

Lastly, we suggest going with an online vendor that specializes in pre-workout gummies made without beta-alanine.  This way, you’re going to be buying from a store that specializes in this product type and is far less likely to be carrying low-quality formulas as their business depends on keeping customers totally satisfied.  Buying straight from the brand is ideal, as this lets you learn a lot about how the actual gummies are produced.
